Bringing together vehicle enthusiasts, families, as well as tourists in one place, the Malta Car Classic can trace its roots back to 2007. The first ever Classic Car Grand Prix was organised by French entrepreneur Thierry Giovannini on the Valletta ring road. In 2009, the Valletta Grand Prix foundation was established. In 2011, the Malta Classic changed its location to Mdina, in the heart of the Island.
